We are all increasingly aware of the fact that the choices we make today with regards to everyday living reflect not only on the environment that our children and grandchildren will enjoy, but on the future welfare of the planet as a whole. When considering the design for a new Horticulture Centre at Edenbridge, which was to be an integral part of our new training services for people with learning disabilities in Kent, we chose to establish our building with ‘green’ technology installed.
As a result, not only did we achieve a marvellous purpose built Training Centre in which it is a delight to spend time, it is also extremely cost effective for the Charity, and we were proud when the building won its category in the South East Renewable Energy Awards in 2006. For us, this Award represents acknowledgment of the many practical ways that CARE is putting values at the centre of our work to provide benefit for all.
Opened by Lord and Lady Astor in April 2007, CARE Kent’s Horticulture Centre “Acorns” is now thriving. As well as offering first-class training in horticulture for people with learning disabilities, it provides bedding plants, shrubs, garden crafts and seasonal arrangements for sale to the local community. It boasts the very first twin wind turbines in the Sevenoaks district, and other environmentally friendly features such as a sedum roof, an underground heat exchange pump, grey water recycling and solar panels help make CARE fit for a greener future.
Visit ‘Acorns’ at Phillippines Close, Edenbridge, Kent TN8 5GN from 10 am – 4 pm Monday to Friday, Sunday 11 am - 3 pm.
