CARE’s services in the south west are organised from a regional hub, currently based at Blackerton on the edge of Exmoor. As the longest established of CARE’s sites, it has ties with the local community that date back to the 1960s and enjoys a great deal of support from people in the area.
On site at Blackerton, there are four houses that provide registered accommodation for 34 people with learning disabilities, including a bungalow that offers specialist care for people that have dementia or more complex needs. CARE focuses on providing services that are tailored to individual need, so while all of the houses are afforded 24-hour support from professional staff teams (including waking night staff if required), the bungalow has a higher staffing ratio and provides more specialist care.
At Blackerton, there are also three flats that are used to enable people to experience independent living before moving off site into accommodation of their own. This provides the opportunity for them to learn valuable life skills in the knowledge that there are always staff members there to help them, every step of the way.
Off site, there are three houses for more independent living:
- Oak Tree House in Bampton (for 7 people)
- Davie House in Yelverton (for 8 people)
- Waltair House in Tavistock (for 12 people)
CARE aims to provide everyone with the support and encouragement to enable them to achieve increased independence, and we work with their families, friends and other agencies to help them to access their own preferred choice of housing.
Our forward plans involve ongoing development of the depth and breadth of our housing options to meet the future needs of the people with learning disabilities in the area. At South Molton, in conjunction with Devon and Cornwall Housing Association, we have established an award winning development of eco-friendly homes that offer supported living for seven people. Residents in these flats are given the same tailored support that we offer to all of our clients, and we also provide domiciliary services in addition, if required.
